The Thing (1982 film)

The Thing also known as John Carpenters The Thing is a 1982 American science fiction horror film directed by John Carpenter, written by Bill Lancaster, and starring Kurt Russell. The films title refers to its primary antagonist a parasitic extraterrestrial lifeform that assimilates other organisms and in turn imitates them. The Thing infiltrates an Antarctic research station, taking the appearance of the researchers that it absorbs, and paranoia develops within the group.

In the Antarctic, a Norwegian helicopter pursues an Alaskan Malamute to an American research station. Upon landing, a Norwegian misthrows a thermite charge, destroying the helicopter, killing him. The surviving Norwegian pursues the dog, firing a rifle, and accidentally hitting Bennings, the meteorologist, in the leg, until he is shot dead by Garry, the station commander. The Americans send MacReady, the helicopter pilot, and Copper, the doctor, to the Norwegian camp for answers, but they find only a charred ruin containing the frozen body of a man who commited suicide with a strait razor. Outside, they discover the burned remains of a humanoid corpse with two faces, which they bring back along with some video tapes and papers found at the camp. Blair, the senior biologist, performs an autopsy on the corpse, finding a normal set of human internal organs.Clark, the dog handler, kennels the Malamute with the stations sled dogs after Bennings told him to put it with the others it soon transforms and attacks them. When he hears the commotion, MacReady pulls the fire alarm, and when all the team members arrive, they shoot at the The Thing to no avail, until Childs, the chief mechanic, incinerates The Thing with a flame thrower. Blair performs another autopsy which leads him to believe the creature perfectly imitates other organisms. The Norwegians records lead the Americans to a buried flying saucer discovered by the Norwegians, that Norris, the geophysicist, hypothesizes is likely over 100,000 years old. Blair becomes increasingly paranoid and withdraws, calculating that if the alien escapes to a civilized area, all life on Earth will be assimilated within 27,000 hours. Fuchs, the assistant biologist, tells MacReady that he is worried about Blair, and according to Blairs journal, the creatures dead remains are still active on a cellular level. The camp enacts safety measures designed to reduce risk of assimilation. ........
